Running schools is hard; educators need more empathy

School challenges are under-appreciated. Lockdowns and smartphones made the work harder. Blame without contact is cheap.

We underestimate the role of school. Kids spent time at home during COVID lockdowns; if you talk to educators, that was often not a good impact. Running schools is tough, and their challenges are under-appreciated. Educators need more empathy for what they face with smartphones and social media in the room and after the bell.

I do not use that as a shield against reform. I use it as a filter against unearned certainty. Anyone who wants to fix schooling should first feel the weight of the day, not only the elegance of a thread.
