Societies need long-term thinkers on purpose

Flourishing groups need wise people with long-term thinking. Most people will not supply that alone; institutions and incentives have to carry it.

Every society that flourishes needs wise people with long-term thinking. Any successful unit needs someone to play that role. Without parents playing it in a family, the future of children can be bleak. Humans have organised in groups for ages; at every point some people carried that load. It stays healthy when their intent and capability align with the long-term prosperity of the group and its progeny.

It is a bit much to expect long-term thinking from common people under ordinary pressure. Either strong social institutions hold the line, or government intervention shapes incentives. Governments, by controlling flows of money, energy, and what people experience and observe, have massive impact on behaviour. Ignoring that when thinking about a society’s future is a luxury. Problems are often well known, and some solutions are known too. Implementation is where the challenges sit, because humans decide based on what they observe, and observation can be steered.
