People are not interchangeable resources

Treating people as swappable units makes management easier on paper. It is often an attempt to avoid the hard work of training, care, and excellence.

Believing that “resources” are interchangeable is often an attempt to make life easier for managers. Process is supposed to replace human diligence and excellence. In practice, that belief is frequently a way to avoid the effort of training people, building capability, and taking care of those who do the work.

I do not deny that process matters. I deny that process can substitute for the formation of specific people who know how to do hard things. Where that substitution is forced, quality becomes temporary and loyalty becomes rational only as long as the next exit is open.
