Research and innovation are a form of tapasya
Long-term focused effort for research is like austerity practised for a purpose. Distracted environments make that rarer and more valuable.
Research and innovation fundamentally require long-term, focused, dedicated effort. In today’s world that effort is like tapasya as practised in the past. Serene surroundings and undistracted attention are not luxury branding for a campus brochure. They are conditions under which deep work becomes possible.
I am not claiming every lab needs a hill hermitage. I am claiming that without some equivalent of sustained attention, we will keep announcing innovation while training only for interruption.
