School years should carry most of the skill load

Fourteen to fifteen years sit in school before college. Employability work that waits until the last years of college is already late for a large share of what a young person needs.

Close to fourteen or fifteen years of a person’s early life pass in school; college is only a few years after that. Ideally, a large part of employability training should happen in school. By the time someone finishes the college stretch around eighteen to the early twenties, they should need finishing touches, not a first introduction to seriousness about work and skill.

The change required in education at school and college level is difficult even to size correctly. What is clear is that the effort needed is massive. Waiting for college alone to fix formation is a structural bet against the calendar of a young life.
